¿Qué es Tether?

Tether is a token issued by the Tether Limited company that belongs to the Bitfinex trading platform. It was built on top of the Omni Layer digital currency protocol, which runs on the Bitcoin blockchain.

The main purpose of this token is to provide stability to traders and members of the cryptocurrency market, as Tether is backed by US dollars in Tether Ltd bank accounts, so its price is not as volatile as the prices of other cryptocurrencies. However, this remains to be proven, and this is why the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission issued subpoenas to both Tether and Bitfinex. Tether Ltd also points out that the Tether token is not a financial instrument and owners of Tethers have no rights to legal claims or guarantees against losses.

However, tether is a very popular token and is used by a number of exchanges (mainly crypto-only) as their main stablecoin. The amount of Tethers has increased to $2.8 billion. During the summer of 2018, approximately 80% of Bitcoin volume was traded in Tethers.
