On January 3, Elon Musk hinted at Dogecoin (DOGE) reaching the moon as soon as next year.
His statement came as a response to Tesla Owners Silicon Valley's post on X, and it actually suggests a DOGE-1 satellite lunar mission in 2027 following previous delays.
SpaceX might put DOGE on the moon in 2027
Today, Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, which calls itself "the most notorious Tesla Club in the world", shared a post on X, including an older statement from Musk, dating back to April 1, 2021.
In his post, Musk said that SpaceX is going to put a literal Dogecoin on the literal moon, and the Tesla Club asked the tech mogul when it will happen.
A few hours ago, Musk responded, "Maybe next year," hinting at a potential Dogecoin on the moon in 2027.
Meanwhile, Tesla Model Doge asked Musk when Tesla would start accepting DOGE, referencing an older X poll from 2021, in which Tesla's CEO was asking people on the platform whether they wanted the company to accept the memecoin. 78% of the respondents said yes.
However, regarding Tesla accepting DOGE, Musk didn't provide an answer.
Musk's jokes on X actually hint at the DOGE-1 mission.
The DOGE-1 lunar mission
The DOGE-1 mission was announced in May 2021 by the Geometric Energy Corporation. DOGE-1 represents a 40 kg cube satellite flying as a payload on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
Back then, the mainstream media also mentioned the subject, highlighting that the DOGE-1 Mission to the Moon was supposed to become a reality in Q1 2022. Also, SpaceX was supposed to start accepting DOGE as payment, according to previous reports.
CNBC revealed that SpaceX vice president of commercial sales Tom Ochinero stated that the mission's target was to "demonstrate the application of crypto beyond Earth orbit and set the foundation for interplanetary commerce."
However, the DOGE-1 mission was delayed, and no satellite has reached the moon by 2026. Musk's latest X post on January 3 hints at a potential launch in 2027.
Crypto market reaction
Despite SpaceX's latest DOGE-related jokes, the memecoin didn't moon following his statement.
Today, DOGE is trading above $0.1, up by over 1% in the past 24 hours, and the dog-themed coins sector is up by over 2%, amidst a slight general crypto market rebound in the past 24 hours.

DOGE reached its ATH above $0.73 on May 8, 2021. Meanwhile, DOGE's sister, NEIRO, is also trading in the green today, up by more than 1%.
However, a community memecoin on Ethereum called Satellite Doge-1 Mission (DOGE-1) recorded a rally today, surging by 12%.
