Spotify, the world’s largest streaming music platform, is piloting a new token-enabled playlist feature to enhance the listening experience of its users. The new service allows holders of certain non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to connect their wallets and access curated music playlists on the platform.
Spotify has confirmed that the pilot is currently only available to Android users in the US, UK, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand. It is restricted to token holders in the Fluf, Moonbirds, Kingship, and Overlord communities.
NFT holders can connect their wallets on Spotify to gain access to community-curated playlists, which are updated regularly during the three-month testing period. The playlists are available only to community members via a unique link.
Overlord, a Web3 gaming and media universe, has announced that Creepz NFT holders can connect their Web3 wallet on Spotify to access the community-curated “Invasion” playlist.

Universal Music Group’s NFT band, KINGSHIP, has also created a token-gated playlist for NFT holders featuring artists such as Queen, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg, and Led Zeppelin.

To access the curated playlists, NFT holders can connect to their Metamask, Trust Wallet, Rainbow, Ledger Live, or Zerion wallets.
Spotify has acknowledged the launch of this pilot and said that it routinely conducts a number of tests in an effort to improve user experience.
It remains to be seen if they plan on rolling out the feature more broadly in the future.
The global streaming platform has previously experimented with integrating NFTs into its service. In May 2022, Spotify allowed a select group of artists, including Steve Aoki and The Wombats, to promote NFTs on their profiles.
Meanwhile, several Web3 music platforms have emerged to decentralize the music listening experience. Audius is a crypto-linked streaming service that allows users to earn AUDIO token rewards for interacting with its app, while Royal and anotherblock allow creators to sell music royalties as fractionalized NFTs.
As the NFT market continues to grow, more music industry players are exploring ways to incorporate the technology into their platforms.
