What is Monero?

Monero (launched in 2014) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency based on the Cryptonote technology. Privacy is built into the system by default for all network participants. The development is currently led by Riccardo Spagni and other core protocol developers, following a split from the original Bitmonero project (derived from Bytecoin) in 2014.

Monero features unlimited inflation. After distributing 18.132 million Monero (as of May 2022), a constant tail emission of 0.6 XMR every 2 minutes results in an approximate annual inflation rate of 1%. This perpetual inflation helps keep miners incentivized and secures the network.

Monero enables private transactions that cannot be linked to each other. It uses Ring Signatures to protect the sender's identity, Stealth Addresses to protect the recipient's identity, and Ring Confidential Transactions (Ring CT) to conceal transaction amounts. This contrasts with Bitcoin, where all transactions are publicly visible, and sophisticated blockchain analysis can reveal user identities. Monero is also working on integrating I2P (The Invisible Internet Project) to protect users' IP addresses.

In April 2018, Monero successfully implemented ASIC resistance to prevent mining centralization. Monero’s privacy features make it a truly fungible currency. It also supports the concept of "view keys," allowing users to share transaction details with a third party or auditor without enabling them to spend the coins.

Governments often have reservations about anonymous cryptocurrencies. For example, Japan's Financial Services Agency has sought to ban such coins due to concerns about their potential use in illegal activities. Despite this, Monero’s strong and supportive community and the ongoing demand for privacy-focused coins suggest that Monero will continue to have a place in the market.

While Monero offers many opportunities for investment and transactions, there are many other cryptocurrencies available that could align more closely with your specific needs.
