This abrupt decision came in response to users exploiting a loophole that allowed them to access content behind paywalls. OpenAI shared news of this development through a tweet on July 4. In it, the company acknowledged the existence of a problem with the Browse feature, stating that it could sometimes "display content in ways we don't want."
It specifically referred to instances where users requested the full text of a URL, which might be fulfilled unintentionally, potentially violating content ownership rights. To rectify this issue, OpenAI has temporarily halted the use of Browse while it develops a fix.
This service is currently only available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and is still in its beta testing phase. The halt seems to be part of the company's efforts to refine and improve the product based on user feedback and experiences.
The issue first came to light when a user on the r/ChatGPT subreddit shared a screenshot of a Browse session. In it, they asked ChatGPT to "print the text" of a link leading to a paywalled article from The Atlantic.

Surprisingly, ChatGPT provided the full text of the article, bypassing the paywall. The post quickly gained traction with over 6,200 upvotes and 284 comments, sparking speculation among users about the mechanics behind this phenomenon.
Some users suggested that ChatGPT's algorithm might be functioning similarly to online paywall removers. These typically access a "Google-cached version" of the article that doesn't include a paywall, a process employed for search engine optimization purposes. If this were the case, it would be the latest example of an increasingly concerning trend: data scraping to train AI models.
Indeed, the controversy around data scraping has grown in recent months, making headlines in various technology circles. Twitter owner Elon Musk recently highlighted the issue as the reason for imposing new restrictions on the number of tweets users can read per day on the platform.
