- Runes, a new protocol on the Bitcoin network, account for 68% of all Bitcoin transactions.
Bitcoin has set a new record, with the number of transactions reaching an all-time high of 926,842. This milestone was achieved just three days after the Bitcoin halving event.
According to data from Glassnode, over 926,000 daily transactions were recorded on Bitcoin (BTC) on April 23. This surpassed the previous record of over 731,000 transactions that were reached in December 2023.
Impact of Bitcoin Runes
The surge in transactions coincided with the launch of Bitcoin Runes, a new protocol for issuing fungible tokens on the Bitcoin network. Runes account for a significant 68% of all Bitcoin transactions.
Investors have executed a total of 3.6 million transactions related to Runes, as per data from Dune. Despite this, the price of Bitcoin remains just above the $64,000 mark, with a 9% fall on the monthly chart.
Future of Bitcoin Runes
While Runes have generated significant interest within the Bitcoin community, the real market opportunity may only come a few months later. This is according to a decentralized finance researcher who goes by the pseudonym Ignas.
Ignas warned that due to their initial lack of utility, Runes could trade similarly to volatile memecoins directly after launch. Despite the record transaction count, the future of Runes and their impact on the Bitcoin network remains to be seen.
