Stellar is a public blockchain built for fast, low-cost money transfers. Its native asset is XLM, also called lumens, which helps move value between users and across currencies. How Does Stellar Work?


Stellar reaches agreement using the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP). Independent validators form overlapping trust groups and confirm new ledger states in a few seconds. History and Development


Stellar launched in 2014 and later adopted SCP to improve security and liveness. Over time the community removed the old inflation feature and the Stellar Development Foundation reduced total supply through a large burn, leaving a fixed supply model. Recent upgrades added modern features, and Soroban introduces smart contracts so developers can build programmable applications while keeping payments fast and low-cost.

Token Supply and Economics


XLM’s supply is fixed at roughly 50 billion units following the 2019 change. There is no mining. A portion of the supply is held by the ecosystem fund to support grants and growth, and the rest circulates on exchanges and wallets. Fees are very small and are paid in XLM; they help secure the network and discourage spam without making everyday transfers expensive.

Use Cases of Stellar


People use Stellar for remittances, payroll, and cross-border business payments where bank transfers are slow or costly. Issuers launch stablecoins and fiat tokens that move on-chain but redeem off-chain.
