Key Points
- Mi Primer Bitcoin, a Bitcoin education initiative based in El Salvador, has launched an open-source Bitcoin Diploma program.
- The updated program aims to promote Bitcoin education internationally, with materials freely available on GitHub for global collaboration and translation.
El Salvador’s Bitcoin education initiative, Mi Primer Bitcoin, has released an improved version of its Bitcoin Diploma program, adopting an open-source format. The program started in 2021, in line with El Salvador’s adoption of Bitcoin (BTC) as an official currency. The revamped program was created in partnership with Bitcoin educators and enthusiasts worldwide, offering an in-depth curriculum on Bitcoin’s history, technical aspects, and practical uses.
Open-Source Approach to Bitcoin Education
The significant change in the program is its open-source nature. All materials, including the Student Workbook, are now freely accessible on GitHub. This move is intended to foster global collaboration and translation efforts. John Dennehy, Mi Primer Bitcoin’s founder and executive director, underscored the transformative potential of Bitcoin education, stating that financial literacy in the Bitcoin era encourages creativity, innovation, and strategic planning.
Dennehy pointed out that the curriculum update is a “significant step” towards their goal of “empowering the world through Bitcoin education.” He explained that while they continuously strive to enhance the content, they have also improved the infrastructure to better adapt the program to local contexts. For instance, they have now established an organized system for communication and best practice guidelines for translations.
Expanding Bitcoin Education Worldwide
The previous version of the diploma was translated into nine languages within a year, and 26 translations are already in progress for the current one. Since the project’s inception, it has been taught to over 25,000 students in El Salvador, resulting in several graduation ceremonies.
In September 2023, Mi Primer Bitcoin collaborated with El Salvador’s Ministry of Education to integrate Bitcoin into the public school curriculum by 2024. Beyond El Salvador, Mi Primer Bitcoin has extended its reach, teaming up with educational institutions and governments globally. For instance, Bitcoin Cuba announced its impending partnership with the program to bring Bitcoin education to local communities.
